Unmasking the Mystery [Maintain The Mystery Story]
Demarco Smith, as translated by Monique Mitchell
I was born an oddity. Unusual. I came out the womb sideways with a bent neck. My eyes were crossed. My tongue lacked control. The doctors couldn’t explain me. They wanted to label me disabled but couldn’t because I functioned just fine.
My tongue was tied as a child. I was born deaf. Before I learned to talk, I would spend hours in my grandmother’s library. She was big into Black History. I’d comb through her Jet magazines that were littered across the floor. I’d leaf through pages of history books that told stories of men and women who looked like me. I spent so much time on her library floor that I eventually taught myself how to read using her Black books as my guide.
I grew up in South Central and our public schools are notorious for poor educational investment. However, LAUSD invested in me because I always scored high on district tests. I was transferred to a magnet program and the supervisors spent thousands of dollars on a microphone and speaker systems to make sure my voice was amplified. I was shown at an early age that despite my speech impediment, my Black voice deserved to be heard.
Though I had many academic achievements, my personal life was lonely. It was difficult to build relationships because I didn’t have faith in my own speech. I was embarrassed by my stutter and afraid of stumbling over or misplacing words. So I kept to myself, my books, my music, and my film.
FIlm was a saving grace for me. Seeing the way stories could be manipulated to deliver a particular message felt powerful to someone like me who didn’t feel comfortable communicating verbally. Me and my brother Corvain Cooper had plans to start a film production company. We spent hours dreaming up the vision and were ready to launch when the unthinkable happened. Corvain was arrested and sentenced to life in prison over a marijuana charge.
As painful and dark as this time was, it only filled me with more conviction and purpose. The last gift he had given me was a hat by The Hundreds that said Maintain The Mystery.
And now, all these years later, my tongue is becoming untied. I am relaxing into my destiny. I feel the shift. I’m ready to be naked with the world. I’m ready to unmask the mystery.

Spike Lee had 40 Acres and a Mule. Black LA has Maintain The Mystery.
I’ve chosen film as my medium because art is the best way I know how to communicate. It’s the best way I know how to be an activist. It’s the best way to influence a society. Through the production of films, we control our own narratives and images. We offer up representation that we never see. In mainstream media, Black men and women are often portrayed as being one-dimensional, when the truth is that we are multidimensional beings. In South Central, you could be both a crip and a skateboarder, but a Hollywood film would only show the crip. A woman could be twerking and then on her way to lead a workshop, but be reduced to only one of those images. I want to capture the full picture. I want to showcase all of us.
My goal is to train young Black filmmakers and expose them to all the options they have in this industry. A kid could be in their room building an entire world with their legos and imagination and not know they have the skills to become a set designer. I want to introduce Black children to possibilities.
Through film, I can turn any place into a landmark, like the ones I studied in my grandmother’s living room. Every historian strives to leave a piece of history behind. This is our history. This is our future. I am present with my purpose. All the ideas I harbored as a child with a tied-tongue are pouring out of me. The mystery is revealed.
